► (1901-65) Político rumano. Fue secretario general del Partido Comunista desde 1945 y presidente del Consejo de Estado en 1961-65.

Político rumano. Se convirtió en jefe del partido comunista en 1944 y ocupó puestos de gobierno claves en el área económica (1946–52). Después de purgar del partido a rivales estrechamente identificados con las políticas soviéticas, llegó a ser primer ministro (1952–55) y adoptó gradualmente aquellas políticas económicas e internacionales que estuvieran al servicio de los intereses de la nación rumana. Como presidente del Consejo de Estado (1961–65), impulsó un programa de industrialización, a pesar de las objeciones de otros países del bloque soviético que deseaban que Rumania continuara siendo un país agrícola. Demostró además la independencia de su país estableciendo relaciones cordiales con países no comunistas y con China.
